What Did Students Do?
This week, students explored the concept of mood in writing. They learned how authors craft a sense of mood through the use of imagery through details connected to their five senses, effective word choice and setting. They worked towards identifying these elements in exemplars. Then, they began to apply these skills and strategies in their own Journey writing. Students chose a mood such as calm and happy to show readers through their story writing. As we move forward, students will have the opportunity to continue to practice how to create mood in their writing.

Here are some student samples of how they've developed a sense of mood in their Journey writing:
-Ash sat on her flying carpet that was as red as a tomato and as magical as a fairy. Then suddenly, all the dark clouds disappeared and revealed a beautiful sunset shining down on The City Of Aqua. Hope filled Ash's body up, she was no longer afraid, she was as confident and bold as a lion. She stood tall as she proudly gazed upon the golden city below, following the bird's lead. Ash felt tense and unable to move. She could feel her heart pound because of how heavenly the place was from above. Her sweaty palms felt the warm velvet of the carpet as she smelt the lavender of the flying creature ahead of her. Ash heard the howling wind rush by her and she felt all tingly and warm inside.
-Lucy examend it to make sure that it would hold her wait then hopped on and started slowly soaring through the bright red, yellow and pink colorful sky. The bird stayed close by her side as she bounced along the big white fluffy clouds. She could feel the warm hot sun on her back and the breeze in her hair. She could even smell warm fresh water coming from the small waterways below. The sky seemed almost soundless, dead quiet except for the comforting sound of the wind brushing against her face and the sound of small Magpie’s and blue jays.
